   Friends  of Sunderland Minster

Serving the Minster/ Serving the City

When the Minster was inaugurated on 11th January, 1998, Bishop Michael Turnbull said that he hoped that the Minster would become a focal point in the city for hospitality, learning, Christian witness and service. The Minster has certainly begun to fulfill this vision. As well as the Sunday Services opportunities are provided at the Minster to celebrate the life of the City in worship: for example the annual City Harvest Celebration. The church also acts as host to many Sunderland groups wishing to offer to God the work of their organisations in special acts of worship: for example a service to celebrate the first year of the Sunderland Housing Group. Many find the church a haven for quiet or for prayer with some people choosing to light a candle at the votive candle stand.

Chaplaincies based at the Minster serve the University, the Civic Centre, industry and commerce, the Fire Brigade, public sector agencies, the community and voluntary sector, the Bridges Shopping Centre, the Empire Theatre and the city centre. This ministry spans across the whole of the City of Sunderland.

Home to the Minster Learning Centre, operated by the City of Sunderland College, the building has a constant throughput of students of all ages who also make use of courses ranging from Beginners French to Water Colour Painting, and the Minster Schools Programme enables thousands of school children to take part in educational visits.

Bishopwearmouth Choral Society rehearses weekly at the Minster and stages several concerts each year.

The Minster has its own Gift Shop and Traidcraft Shop together with the Clock Tower Coffee Shop providing breakfasts, lunches and snacks. A warm welcome awaits you!

The Minster Office is open Monday to Friday from 9.15am to 3.00pm: 0191 5654066.

The "Friends" organisation has been launched to raise the profile of the Minster, its activities and ministry, and to help ensure that this beautiful building at the heart of the city is preserved for many generations to come. All Friends will receive a Newsletter and details of events in which they can participate. Each year the Friends' Service and A.G.M. will take place in the Minster. It is sincerely hoped that the Friends will become a vibrant group of people eventually spreading around the world and contributing greatly to the development of the Minster and the enhancement of life in the City of Sunderland.

We warmly invite you to consider becoming a Friend.

You may do this either by taking out individual membership or, if you are an organisation, you may wish to consider taking out corporate membership that offers companies, public bodies, community and voluntary groups the opportunity to become a 'corporate friend'.
